How to Tell if Silver is Authentic

There's jewelry that looks like silver but isn't. Learning to distinguish it takes 5 minutes and saves you disappointment — and money.

First: understand what you're looking for

When someone says something "is silver," they might be referring to three very different things:

  • Fine silver (.925 or .950): The true standard for jewelry. More than 92% of the piece is pure silver; the rest is copper or another alloy metal. It lasts for decades, maintains its appearance, and has material value.
  • Silver-plated or silver-coated: A base of another metal (stainless steel, copper, brass, zinc) covered with a thin layer of silver. It looks the same initially, but this layer wears off in months, revealing the metal underneath.
  • Nickel silver or "German silver": Contains no silver. It's an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel that mimics the color of silver. It has zero value as silver.

The following tests help you distinguish between the three cases.


Test 1 — The hallmark (the most reliable)

Certified fine silver always has a number engraved on the inside of the piece. In Mexico and the international market, the most common hallmarks are:

  • .925 — 92.5% pure silver. The international standard known as "sterling silver."
  • .950 — 95% pure silver. The historical standard from Taxco.
  • .999 — 99.9% pure silver. Rarely used in jewelry because it is very soft.

On a ring, look for the hallmark on the inside of the band, usually engraved with small letters. You'll need good light and possibly a small magnifying glass.

What if it has no hallmark? It's not necessarily fake — very old pieces or those handmade by small artisans sometimes don't have one. But the absence of a hallmark is a reason to be skeptical and apply the following tests.

Can the hallmark be faked? Yes, although it's uncommon in mid-priced jewelry. A hallmark can be engraved on any metal. That's why this test, while the most direct, is complemented by the others.


Test 2 — The magnet

Silver is not magnetic. Bring a strong magnet (like a speaker magnet or a powerful refrigerator magnet) close to the piece. If the magnet strongly attracts it, the piece has a steel or iron core — it is not solid silver.

Important limitation: This test rules out steel and iron, but it doesn't rule out copper, brass, or zinc, which are also not magnetic. A plated piece on a brass base will pass this test even if it's not solid silver.


Test 3 — The ice cube

Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of all metals. If you place an ice cube on the piece (and the ambient temperature is normal), the ice should start melting almost immediately — much faster than on a plastic surface or another metal.

This test works best with flat pieces or those with a large surface area. For thin rings, the effect is less noticeable but still observable.

Why does it work? Silver conducts heat so efficiently that it transfers the ambient temperature to the ice almost instantly. Other common metals in fake jewelry (brass, copper, nickel silver) have much lower conductivity.


Test 4 — The white cloth

Gently rub the piece with a clean white cloth. If it leaves a black or gray mark on the cloth, that's a good sign — it's silver oxide (silver sulfide) that rubs off with friction. Authentic silver oxidizes in a characteristic way; imitation metals leave stains of a different color or no mark at all.

Note: If the piece has been recently cleaned or is highly polished, it may not leave a mark even if it's genuine silver.


Test 5 — The acid (for when you need absolute certainty)

Nitric acid reacts differently with silver and other metals. A drop of nitric acid on .925 silver produces a creamy green reaction; on low-grade silver, it produces a darker green; on non-precious metals, it produces a bright green or brown reaction.

This test is the most definitive, but it has two disadvantages: nitric acid is not for everyday use (it's found in jewelry and chemistry supply stores) and it can leave a small mark on the piece if applied in a visible spot. That's why it's done on the inside or in a discreet location.

Professional jewelers and pawn shops use this test routinely.


Visual signs of plated or fake silver

Beyond the tests, there are signs you can observe without any equipment:

  • The piece has areas where another metal color is visible. On edges, corners, or friction points, if a reddish (copper), yellowish (brass), or blackish (zinc) tone appears, the silver is only a surface layer.
  • The price is extremely low for the size of the piece. .925 silver has a material price. An 8-gram fine silver ring has a raw material cost of approximately $50–80 MXN just for the silver. If the entire ring costs $100 MXN, it cannot be solid silver.
  • No visible hallmark anywhere on the piece. Check with light and a magnifying glass. The complete absence of a hallmark is suspicious.
  • The piece weighs very little. Silver is a dense metal. A genuine silver ring feels "solid" in the hand. If it feels hollow or too light for its size, it may have a core of another material.
