Why silver tarnishes and how to clean it in 5 minutes

Almost everyone who buys their first silver ring asks, "Why is it turning black? Is it fake?"

No, it's not fake. It's the opposite.

The chemistry behind tarnishing

Pure silver does not oxidize with oxygen in the air, unlike iron which forms rust. What happens to silver is a different chemical reaction: it reacts with sulfur present in the environment, in sweat, in some foods, and in many personal care products.

The result of this reaction is silver sulfide — a dark layer, ranging from gray to black, that forms on the surface of the piece.

Important: this layer does not harm the silver. It is superficial, does not penetrate the alloy, and is easily removed. A piece that tarnishes is authentic silver reacting normally with its environment.

Plated or fake silver, curiously, does not tarnish in the same way — or not at all, because it's not silver. It chips, shows the metal underneath, or simply loses its shine without that characteristic patina.

What accelerates tarnishing

• Perfumes and colognes: sulfur in fragrances is one of the most aggressive factors. Putting on your ring after perfume, not before, makes a noticeable difference.
• Sweat: especially in hot climates or during exercise. Sweat contains organic sulfur.
• Egg yolk and foods with sulfur: garlic, onion, seafood. If you wear rings while cooking, tarnishing is faster.
• Body creams, sunscreens, and makeup: they accumulate in engravings and accelerate the reaction.
• Humidity: storing silver in the bathroom is the most common mistake. Water vapor with soap residue is a perfect environment for silver to oxidize quickly.
• Storing it unused: paradoxically, a ring stored for months in a drawer tarnishes more than one worn every day. Movement and skin contact maintain its natural shine.

How to clean it: homemade method in 5 minutes

This method works for .925 and .950 silver without stones, or with stones like zirconia. Do not use it with opals, turquoise, pearls, or porous stones.

What you need: a piece of aluminum foil, hot (not boiling) water, baking soda, and a soft cloth.

Steps:

1. Line the bottom of a container with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
2. Add hot water to cover the piece (not boiling).
3. Add one tablespoon of baking soda per liter of water. It will bubble a little — this is normal.
4. Submerge the ring. Make sure it touches the aluminum foil.
5. Wait 2 to 3 minutes. You will see how the silver sulfide transfers from the ring to the aluminum foil through an electrochemical reaction.
6. Remove the ring, rinse it with clean water, and dry it completely with the soft cloth.

The aluminum foil may turn dark — that's the silver sulfide that transferred. That's exactly what you wanted.

For everyday maintenance: a jewelry cloth (or any soft microfiber cloth) gently rubbed over the silver restores its superficial shine without the need for water or products.

How to store it to prevent quick tarnishing

• Store it in an anti-tarnish cloth bag or in its individual case. Contact between pieces also scratches them.
• Avoid the bathroom as a permanent storage location.
• If you won't be using the piece for an extended period, wrap it in acid-free paper or a flannel cloth.
• Store a small piece of chalk or silica gel with your jewelry — it absorbs moisture from the environment.

A note on patina

Not all darkness on silver is bad. Pieces with deep engravings or raised designs develop a patina — a natural darkening in the valleys of the engraving that contrasts with the shiny ridges and makes the design appear more dramatic and with depth.

Many Taxco silversmiths deliberately apply this patina when finishing pieces. If you have an engraved piece and there are dark areas in the grooves of the design, it may be intentional. Before cleaning everything, observe if that darkness is part of the design.
