Low-grade silver (.800 or .720). It contains silver, but mixed with so much copper or other metals that it loses its color and tarnishes quickly.

Fine silver .925 or .950. Real jewelry silver. The number indicates purity: .925 means 92.5% of the piece is pure silver. This is the kind that lasts for years, doesn't chip, and, with proper care, can last for generations. You can recognize it by the hallmark engraved on the inside of the band.

If you're giving an important ring, make sure it's .925 or .950. Anything else is buying appearance, not jewelry.

How to find out the size without them knowing?

This is the number one challenge for anyone wanting to give a surprise ring. Three practical ways:

Borrow a ring they already wear. If the person has rings and one of them fits well, borrow it under any pretext and measure the inside with a ruler. The inside diameter gives you the size.
